Electric Hydro

Electric Hydro

Postby Maui » Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:02 am

I'm busy building an electric hydro. She's almost done, as I have only the strut and rudder config to sort out. I'll post some pics later tonight.
I initially thought that I would run her on 24 cell nimh's, but I have the gut feeling the weight is going to be a problem as my surface area is not that big. So I am thinking of rather going the lipo route, putting 3 x 3s lipo's in. The weight is much less but now I fear that when on speed she might lift of. All in good time as I will post back once she is done, with pics, data logger reports etc.
I am pushing hard on this, because once this is done, I want to be able to say, this is the fastest little electric boat in South Africa!!!

Here are a couple of build pics. Project started out and would have been a rigger, but I was a bit lazy.
So I took one of my previous homemade balsa boats, and extended it.
Power is going to be a Just Go Fly Z30A 1360kv motor, swinging a Octura 48mm prop and a Suppo 80amp HV esc.
Both motor and ESC was sourced from http://www.rcgear.co.za

Pictures not added is the strut I used. I took a Hirobo 60 torque drive system, used the alum couplings, the brass tube and the stainless shaft. Has the perfect amount of flex to run in a hydro or rigger! Couldn't believe it. Hopefully I can supply some pics of that soon.

Ok, and there was a bit of delay...like the movement in the Blue Bulls backline... (DUCK) :D
Now, I know for a fact there aren't that many boating peeps in SA, and mostly ( I think because boats parts are rare, and pricey!) So this might interest the type of person that is hands on, and does not want to spend a fortune on a ATR or even an RTR boat. By the way, they aren't even that fast to begin with. They also need hop up parts like the most of the RTR stuff out there, be it cars, heli's,aeri's or boats.

So far, the hull was finished...I've now managed to get my hands on some off cut aircraft aluminium for the strut and the engine mount. The engine mount is very primitive as I don't have the right tools for the job. The strut is 2 pieces bent in 90 deg. angles, and a smaller part that I've drilled holes in and files down as much as I could! Filing the ally is dam hard with a crappy file, don't ask me how I know this.

I then took the Hirobo torque tube, stuffed it into the hydro, passing it through the holes I drilled into the ally. I read somewhere that hot glue works well, so I opted for that inside the tub.

The boat has 2 coats of paint now, I then sanded it a bit and found a couple of little holes etc. So I stuffed some white woodfiller in.Just waiting for it to dry and hopefully tomorrow I can finish painting. All the electronics are sorted out, HV connectors and all (that I did untill 1 this morning) The motor had a stutter. What I mean by that is that when you throttle up, it goes clocks and anti-clocks, makes a funny noise and stops. You can immediatly feel the wires getting warm, so obviously this is not good.
I thought that the Suppo 80amp HV wasn't programmed right. So I checked timing, this didn't solve it, checked the auto cell count, because it shows in the manual that the default is is NIMH, change that to my cell count for the lipo, still didn't work. Liaan from RCGear (lucky I have him on Skype, and he NEVER sleeps...guys a machine :geek: Liaan then suggested that I only connect 2 wires at a time to the motor. It initializes, then you know the 2 wires you have are right. Swopped around and then found that one of the wires had some corrosion on, and when I soldered into the connector, it semi rejected the solder. Anyway, cut the wire a bit shorter, extended it with another piece and voila.

So everything is running, and ready to get popped into my hydro, once the paint is done. As soon as I have maidened, I can hopefully get a clip up on Youtube.

Update: Bought a R14 Crazy Store knife, thought that this would be the best rudder as it is sharpened, and stainless.Took the stem off, and took a HoneyBee King 2 landing skid tube to put over the knife blade. However, in any build if things go 100% you must know that your luck just ran out. I struggled with the rudder assembly and it took me almost 2 hours. Don't even ask why!!! I almost torched the damn boat out of frustration. :x

Sunday evening took the boat too Kids beach, tested to make sure she is water tight, No Leaks!!! Phew
Weather permitting, ( the tides look right thankfully ) the maiden will be from tomorrow onwards.
Video en data log to come...

Project has been put on hold. Motor bearings seized, I think this was due to some previous abuse. Will have to try and find the right bearings or alternatively another motor, which is sad because this motor has so much torque, that it gets luke warm spinning the prop. :(

Found a replacement bearing, put it in as she was purring like a kitten.
Last night the weather was perfect, so after work I rushed the the river. Put the boat in, and found that my strut might be to shallow, OR my weight to much forward.
So just as a test, I moved the lipo's backwards in the hull, and found that it worked better.

This boat is a DEMON, and I am so chuffed! Drew max amps of 82.26 and the voltage dropped during this amp draw from 35/36 volts to 21 volt. This was only for one burst however. As soon as the boat gets the behind out of the water, the amps lower. Will try and get video footage today, this is a must see one!!!

Awesome speed!!!

DISASTER !!! Yesterday went out for a run, E-Flite lipo's are CRAP!!! Couldn't take the punch! Puffed within 3 minutes of testing, causing everything to catch fire!
I am very upset, but now I know, to never ever use a lipo in a boat again. Lost all 3 lipos, ESC, rx, servo. Back to the drawing board. I have one clip, just a short burst of the potential the boat HAD! Funny enough, the amp draw was only at 72 amps, lower than the previous test, and the lipos were only luke warm.
