Funtana X100 Electric Conversion

Well, after few months of waiting for all the parts etc to arrive and after unsuccessfull maiden (long story of stupidity) , I was able to test fly the Funtana this weekend for the first time, all I can say is.. WOW.. totally over powered but SOOOO much fun ;-).

Current setup:

Motor: NNB A5330-9 260kv,
Prop: XYH/EMP 17x8 E
Battery: 9s Revo 3300mah.
ESC: NNB 80 A HV
Servo's: Ino-lab D761MG all round except on rudder which is a D751MG
Receiver pack: A123 1100mah 2s.
Receiver, AR7000 Spektrum
Current power: 1800-1600W, depending on battery charge. Peak amp about 55A. Eagle tree flight at bottom of page.

Flying time: 7 min, using about 2500mah, so should be able to get 8-9 min.

Also tested 10s1p A123 pack, flew fine, need bigger prop to compensate for drop voltge, Only flew 5 min and put 1600mah back in, so should be able to get about 6 min flying time doing 3D flying.

Rest of aircraft is standard, only modified firewall to allow more air movement between fusalage and cowl area. Also need to decide still where to cut cooling holes. I'm flying with no cooling air exit holes at the moment and air temp seemed to have increased by 2 Degree's C, which is not to bad, but there is definetly a high presure forming in the cowl (measured with altimeter)so need to find nice place to cut few small exit holes.

Pictures below of engine mount and engine with extra back bearing to help the normal X mount cope with 3D Gyro forces. Maybe not needed, but you can never have enough support ;-)

Picture before first maiden. Still have test wooden prop on, which gave to much power (2500W). HYX 17x8 now produce about 1800W and still to much.

Hi Koos,

May I ask, what is your AUW?

I'm busy with a Extra 300 47" span, claimed AUW should be between 1.5Kg and 2.5Kg so was thinking along the lines of electric setup as well.

Hi Splat

Don't actually know the AUW. I'll try weight it sometime.

Regarding the motor question on your Extra, i'll answer you on another thread viewtopic.php?f=20&t=15

Cheers

"Now this looks like a nifty project. I've flown a glow version of this plane and they perform very well. Watch out for high speed flutters on steep decends, I lost one that way. Why the extra support with bearing at the back of the motor? And whats with the Spray-and-Cook (back ground in pic).

Hi Casper.

The extra support at the back it so help with the "sideways" forces from the larger props and 3D flying. Normally one don't bother to much to make the mounting stronger or give more support, but doing 3D and doing full speed snap, a huge amount sideway forces are generated (gyro scopic).
The back mount now simply support the main shaft, so main shaft fully suppoerted and motor itself only need to support its own weight.

Hope that make sense.

The aircraft is propped to stay below the 100km/h recommended range. its purly propped for power. I'll be fitting a 18x8 next time. The 17x8 has enough power to hover, but its bit slow on the pull out. The 18" should give bit more torque. The motor can handle 2500w+ and only doing 1700 now, so can prop even larger if really need be. (need extend landing gear then)

spray and cook = teflon in a can.. Best thing to get those tight heatshrink over the wires, or antenna through long tube... many other uses as well. And smells good :geek:
