Beam E4 A123 Conversion

Postby Koos » Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:12 am

Hi

Thought share my first results with you. Stuck 3s a123 2300 pack into beam, i def need to change the pinion to 15T or 16T. the hover amp is only 17 amps, and normally 25 on lipo, Head speed def down a lot, should be able todo 3D as its now, but not gonna be as much fun

For learning.. i would def recommend it!!. 3 1/2 min hover, 800 mah, so theory should get about 7 min floating about !!.

Will be doing more testing soon

ok. Had second flight today.. about same outside temperature

this time let the pack run completely flat . Graph below. The voltage seems to hold up a bit better... Think need to put about 10 cycles on to really see difference. Total flying time, 6 1/2 min.

Recharge time 12 min, 30 seconds.. 2250 mah put back in.. did i mention run it flat!.

3rd cycle.. shorter flight, about 6 1/2 min.. 1700mah used.. tried todo normal flying this time.. damn fig 8's are crap difficult.. good practice though

battery voltage now staying higher...

Will do some more flying this week and post the 10+ cycle report

10 Cycles done... starting to get used to the baby...

Did some lazy fig 8's and some tic tocs (easy when pack fresh) and then just normal climb outs.. and piro hovers for practice.

Battery voltage keeping up much better now... seems like a123 need to be run in a bit.

Graph below.. the last spike was climb out with attempted roll... with current setup and flat pack, that was interesting say the least..... still shaking as i type

Ok.. eventually got energy to go to field..

Did some fig 8's and some stall turns.. forgot how to do those.. but hey... never to old to relearn.

I'm more than happy with performance... I tested a very small tail down upright funnel at min 4.2 for about 30 seconds and i was almost full aileron so head was loaded badly.. you can see graph spiked at about 25Amps and battery voltage dropped to 8.3 v.... think i might throw that 60A ESC in bin now.. safe some weight and stick 30A in. should perform even better.

so after 11 flights.. a123 is big thumbs up for any sport flying including rolls and loops!!. and 15 min recharge times rules!!

I'll take the A123 Beam with to TFMC this weekend if anyone interested to see it fly.

Hi Below my 15th flight results. Its damn windy today so graph not so smooth.

Pack much better now since first cycle.
Min voltage was: 7.79, now 8.29, 6% inmprovement
Hover voltage was: 8.45 now 8.96 after 3 min.

21th cycle (missed 20th cycle, eagle tree run out memory.. forgot to clear the previous 10 flights).

have look at min 4.2. I was in FFF and yank stick back.. nice big woof from blades and could almost count them as they went around.. was bit to quick on the sticks and bogged it stupid .. heli did stop on dime though .

Still impressed with the a123.. Getting about 6 min flying now. and extra 1-2 min hover.. think longest flight was 9 min. The last flight (below) was 6 min of rolls, loops, some dodgy stall turns and 1 or 2 funnels.. then about 1 min hovering about.

OK, seeing that my Eagle Tree toys arrived, i could not help myself so stuck Brushless RPM sensor on.

Results: hover RPM +- 2500. Full power punch out, 2200. normal mode , rpm 1900.. not bad for f3c flying.. heli dead stable

Graph below, voltage vs rpm.

Min Voltage 8.36, still getting better
Hover voltage after 3 min: 9.04 (also stil improving)

OK
16T pinnion is on, rpm up by 200. might try 17T later..

Was able to do tic tocs now, which means more than enough power for rest.. static rolls now more acchievable as well, even with wrong timing.

Graphs below

Some pics of A123 on my Beam. Had to dril 2 new holes in canopy about 1cm backwards to make the canopy an easy fit. I could get it on with orginal holes, but to much mission

Did some more flying now again.. now able to do aleron tic tocs even after 5 min of flying, so pinnion making nice difference... gonna flying another 30 flights on this setup and see how she goes.

OK... weather gave me gap so could do some more flying. Missed the 40th cycle (was playing to much at VD).

Here the 41st and 42nd cycles ... Check the difference in power between cold pack (first part of graph) and warm pack. Amps jump from peak of 30 to 40, and voltage is much higher... goes to show.. warm pack is good pack.. well for a123

Update

Guessing about 105 cycles now. left it on shelf for a whle fully charged, then few weeks flat. and put about 15 flights on it this week. Pack still stys at 8.5v under load, same as first cycles. Don't we LOVE a123. Still getting 2000 - 2180 MAH out .. All charges was fast charge (10.5A)

Change to 17T pinnion, head speed very nice now.. Need to go wring it out at field still but much better power.

Still only peaks at 40A with at 8.5v (340w) Maybe can go with 18T pinnion or need to up the KV on motor..

Measured heli, AUW 840g

Flying time, still about 5:30, put 1800 - 2000mah back in.

Graphs below. for just hoving in road in windy street.. the peaks are full power punch outs. last few min just doing some fig 8's
