Postby Koos » Mon Feb 22, 2010 8:27 pm

Hi All

Thought I'll share my Compass Odin 90 electric conversion. Still early days of testing, but so far its flying at least.

Current setup:
Stock Odin 90.
custom motor mount.

Main rotor setup:
Motor: NNB 4130 380kv from http://www.rcgear.co.za
ESC: Hobbywing 100A 12s HV.
A123 10s1p RC Gear

Tail rotor:
Stock Tail with Beam E4 450 main shaft.
NNB 2814 1000kv with bell drilled out to 5mm. Bearings was straight swop with Beam E4 main shaft bearings. http://www.rcgear.co.za
NNB 40a ESC also from RC Gear
A123 3s1p RC Gear

AUW : 4.48kg with batteries etc.
TODO:
-Proper flights
-Determin runtime
-Setup Tail mixing in different fashion or find governing ESC for tail.
-Recheck new tail unit and setup (fixed bad vibraion on old unit)
-New pinion mount and gear ratio

Tail Setup, 2814. Been changed to 5mm shaft now.

Need to clean up wiring and find better place for battery packs. Bit tail heavy.

Eagle tree stats with flight on new tail hub and changed tail curve.

Big saving on amps. tail used 630mah on 4:30 min flight.
Main rotors about 1300 mah hovering in no wind. Need to do some more flying to get proper stats.

Main rotor Graphs below.

4 min flight, 980 mah. Spikes are full pitch climb outs.

Quick update.

Eventually got around to check the head setup... should done while ago.. had 15 degrees on positiev and 7 on negative, no wonder it flew weird

resetup to +-11, do some test flights tommorrow, load should be less on full pitch climb outs.

Also want to change rpm up a bit to see if motor gets bit cooler and what mah usage are.

So, everyone keeps asking why the dual drive: here my latest answer :)

I'm trying to provide just enough power to the tail to keep it in check, as soon as gyro gives less pitch the tail must slow down again to reduce power waste due to drag etc. ...

If you look at the stats of the Eagle tree graphs, by simply dropping the RPM on the tail, i saved 60w of power. (about 10% of total). that means 10% longer flying. So, if I can even get it down more while doing normal flying where very little tail power is needed (forward flight) i might save even more. but, i need to somehow get power back into system when needed..

Re setup head, +-11 graph

Now that there is less pitch , the stick sitting higher on hover which in turn gives more throttle ==> increased rpm which draws about 2 more amps on ave. Need to drop the curve a bit , no need to waste energy here.

Moved the Flybar colars to the outside right next to the paddles. Also changed top mixing arm to the middle hole. Hovering more stable, but collective still mission... wind was humping though
